U.N. Official Warns of Food Aid Shortage in Afghanistan

Dr. Ramiz Alakbarov, the United Nations’ top humanitarian official, said emergency food distributed by the organization to hundreds of thousands of hungry Afghans would be exhausted by Sept. 30.

Situation in Afghanistan from a humanitarian perspective continues to be extremely tense. As I speak to you today from Kabul, more than half of the Afghan children do not know if they will have a meal tonight or not. And that’s the reality of the situation they’re facing on the ground. By the end of September, the stocks, which World Food Program has in the country will be out — we will be out of stocks. We will not be able to provide those essential food items because we will be out of stocks. And for us to keep the current demand, we need at least $200 million only for the food sector, to be able to provide the food to the most vulnerable.
