Vigil Held for Slain Teacher Sabina Nessa

Mourners gathered in southeast London to remember Sabina Nessa, a 28-year-old elementary school teacher who was killed in a park near her home. Her death has reignited outrage over violence against women in Britain.

“She didn’t reach her 29th birthday next month. Sabina loved our family. We have lost our sister, my parents have lost their daughter and my girls have lost such a brilliant, loving, caring auntie who dearly loved them.” “I kind of see myself, kind of thing. It could quite easily — she could — she could be many of us, kind of thing. Very similar age, same job, just different — different circumstances, kind of, innit? So it hits home about what my parents kind of said when I was — when I was younger, like, just: ‘Don’t walk home on your own. Get a cab. We’ll pick you up.’” “We do think about where we’re moving around, and how. We shouldn’t have to do that. We shouldn’t have to be worrying. It shouldn’t be a case of us having to make all the changes to accommodate behavior that’s not right. So I think that’s what we want, we just want to be given a priority instead of — it feels almost like it’s ignored, it’s just accepted that this is what happens and everyone just carries on and nothing ever changes.”
